When the element is removed

If the part of the page an open comment is on is taken off the page, Drobber notices, shows it and offers to mark the comment fixed.

Comments stay pinned to the part of the page they were left on, so they move with it when the layout changes. If that part is taken off the page altogether, an open comment would otherwise float where it used to be. Instead, Drobber spots it and tells you.

What you see#

  • On the site, the pin turns into a faded outline with a dashed edge, where the element used to be. In the comments panel the comment has a Removed tag.
  • Open the comment and a note says This element is no longer on the page, with a Mark fixed button.
  • If the comment asked for it to go (for example "remove this", "get rid of the banner" or "we don't need this"), the note says Looks like this has been removed, as asked. Mark fixed is all that's left to do.
  • In Drobber, the comment has an Element removed badge in the comment lists and a Removed badge on the Board, and the same note with Mark fixed when you open it.
  • The hourly email of comment updates lists it once, with a link to the comment: "1 open comment: its element has been removed from the page. Done?"

How Drobber knows#

It checks while your team and clients review the page as normal, a few seconds after the page has settled, and checks again a moment later, so content that loads late is not mistaken for removed. It only checks at the screen size (desktop, tablet or mobile) the comment was left at.

  • Something that is only closed, like a menu, basket drawer, pop-up, tab or slide, is not removed. Its comment shows a Hidden tag instead, and the pin appears when you open it.
  • For highlighted text, Drobber looks for the words. If the words were changed but the element they were in is still there, that counts as changed, not removed.
  • A comment on the page as a whole is never treated as removed.

If the element comes back (it was moved back, or it was only missing for a while), the note and badges go away by themselves.

Resolved comments are looked after by regression watch instead. See When a fixed comment changes again.
